An interesting overstrike
Lot 2960
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 21 mm, 3.17 g, 2 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Siscia. Irregular mint, after 318. Laureate, helmeted and cuirassed bust of Constantine I to right; around, imitative legend. Rev. Two victories standing facing each other and holding shield inscribed VI/VI over altar; around, imitative legend and mintmark. Traces of overstriking, otherwise, good very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

This coin is a contemporary imitation of the Victoriae laetae type, overstruck on an official coin from Siscia (RIC VII 39). Fragments of Crispus' name are visible on the struck reverse, and on the obverse, we find PRINCIPIA [IVVENTVTIS], along with parts of the mint mark ЄSIS. The overstrike belongs to a 'Danubian' type minted in or near the Balkans. This coin prompts questions about whether coins featuring Crispus were demonetized in Licinius' territory during the deteriorating relations between the two emperors in the early 320s.
